Firefighters responding to a grass fire at Port Melbourne today had to call for backup when their own truck ignited!

Fire fighters from Altona fire station responded to a grass fire in Westgate Park in Port Melbourne in the truck shortly after 11:30am but had to call two backup tankers in after the auxiliary pump of the fire truck caught fire.

The truck has been plagued by faults for the past year. It was towed to workshops in January after the alternator failed, and was out of service until March.

The Fire Rescue Victoria fleet is in such poor condition that trucks are igniting when they are called to respond to fires.

This is not normal, and it is not acceptable. It places firefighters and the Community they protect in serious and unnecessary danger.
