Last night, one of Victoria’s busiest fire trucks was out of action — leaving Melbourne without vital frontline coverage.
Here’s what happened:
Firefighters were forced to take their out-of-date truck out of service due to a steering fault.
They were then directed to drive across the city to collect the state’s last spare truck — only to discover it had already been withdrawn the day before because of a transmission fault.
Once the fault was confirmed, that truck was also taken out of service, leaving crews without a working appliance until after 1am, when repairs were finally completed by our dedicated workshop staff.
This is what a fire service at breaking point looks like.
Where are the consequences for Minister Vicki Ward, as our fire service crumbles under her watch?
Where is the accountability from Commissioner Gavin Freeman, who continues to force firefighters to rely on unsafe and unreliable trucks?
Meanwhile, the Allan Government is doubling your emergency services tax — yet slashing Fire Rescue Victoria’s budget.
Our firefighters deserve better.
Our community deserves better.
It’s time for real accountability and a safe, reliable fire service for all Victorians. #firecrisisvictoria#victoria#melbourne#firecrisis
